The Senior Leadership Team at Hilltop is made up of Sue Kinghorn, the school’s Deputy Headteacher, Katharine Lee, the Foundation Stage Leader, Lucy Johnson, the SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) and Key Stage Two Team Leader, Monica Romanay, the Key Stage One Team Leader and Liz Clark, the Headteacher.
The Senior Leadership team meets weekly and focuses its work on a balance between managing short term organisational priorities and longer term whole school initiatives, looking at the ‘bigger picture’ aspects of the school. The SLT regularly reviews aspects of school life and organisation with the focus during these reviews being the children, ensuring that school policies and procedures have the well-being and outcomes of the children as the priority.
Katharine Lee – Team Woodland Team Leader
Team Woodland is made up of the Acorn, Bluebell and Willow classes.
The staff working in the Team Woodland are: Katharine Lee (Foundation Stage Leader), Ruth Doyle and Katharine Lee (Willow Class Teachers), Amrit Sidhu (Acorn Teacher) and Hayley Savage (Bluebell Teacher).
Our children’s learning and welfare is set down in the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
There are three prime areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. There are also the four additional areas of Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding The World and Expressive Arts and Design. All these together cover the learning and welfare requirements for this age group.
We incorporate these areas into the children’s everyday experiences with the children taking the lead in their learning and being at the centre of everything we do. The learning is through whole-class work, group work, individual work and also through the children’s own play in free-flow, where all three classes mix together. During free-flow the children are able to choose to be inside in one of the three classrooms or experiencing our large outside area.
The children’s learning is ‘captured’ in their Learning Journeys which are both a folder, to collate all of the art work, and mark making they do, and an online journal which is a collection of photos and observations which is emailed to parents regularly. There are frequent opportunities for our parents to be involved through our weekly Song and Rhyme Time sessions, our monthly Stay and Play and Open Afternoon and through our WOW and parent observations. Monica Romanay – Team Enchantment Team Leader
Team Enchantment is made up of 3 classes that bring together the majority of Year 1 and all of Year 2. These classes are Treetops taught by Tina Artis, Meadow taught by Rhiannon Smith and Castle taught by Monica Romanay. We work to help the Year 1 children’s transition from Foundation Stage and continue to drive forward and aim high for our team including the Year 2 children in preparation for their end of Key Stage 1 assessment.
In our team, all the learning is generated and inspired by the children, we go with their interests and facilitate different experiences and opportunities to develop their independence and ownership of their own potential, which leads to the ultimate learning experience! We are really lucky to work in such a great team that is supported by some fantastic Nursery Nurses and Teaching Assistants. We meet as a team each week to share our success and talk about ways to develop our personal, social and emotional well-being. Lucy Johnson – Team Adventure Team Leader
Team Adventure incorporates all the Year 3 and 4 children at Hilltop First School. Ocean, Island and Secret Garden work closely together to make them all feel part of one team. It is particularly important for the classes to spend time together in this team as we want them to know each other extremely well in the lead up to their transition to middle school if they are a Year 4 child. The teachers for this team are Grace Gladwin(Ocean), Priya Fadnis and Emma Fancy (Secret Garden), and Lucy Johnson (Island).
In Team Adventure we make the learning fun and enjoyable with an expectation that the children work independently for much of the time. Team Adventure are also very fortunate as the children have the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument with the Berkshire Maestros. This is an experience the children enjoy and we hope they continue once they have left us.
At Hilltop we believe in ‘going with the children’ and therefore all the classes have different experienceology foci. We come together once a week in a Team Assembly where the children get the opportunity to share what they have been learning that week in the hope of inspiring others in their learning.
